Tourist Attraction in Mymensingh Division:
Mymensingh is one of the
famous divisions in Bangladesh for renowned
educational institutes, Brahmaputra River, and the beauty of green
paddy fields, Birisiri and Garo pahar also known for educational institutions
like Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh Medical College, Jatiya
Kabi Kazi Nazrul Islam University, Teachers' Training College (Male &
Female) and Mymensingh Girls' Cadet College. Other landmark institutions
include Shilpacharjyo Jainul Abedin Shongrohoshala and Mymensingh Army
Cantonment. Also it is related with old Brahmaputra River, handcrafted duvet
called Nakshikantha and a rural ballad called Moimonsingho Geetika.
There
are many tourist spots and sites of cultural, natural and historical interest
in and around Mymensingh. Most important sites around in the greater Mymensingh
area are:
1.Bangladesh
Agricultural University (BAU):
Bangladesh
Agricultural University (BAU) the premier seat of higher agricultural education
and research in the country. Its activities cover all the domains of
agricultural sciences having direct bearing on terrestrial and aquatic
productivity. The university was established in 1961 on the basis of the
recommendations made by the Commission on National Education and the Food and
Agriculture Commission in 1959 under the East Pakistan Agricultural University
Ordinance, 1961. The Prime Minister of
the Peoples' Republic of Bangladesh is the Chancellor of the university and the
Vice-chancellor is the executive head.
2.Shilpacharya
Zainul Abedin Museum:
Shilpacharya
Zainul Abedin Museum a centre for collection and preservation of Zainul
Abedin's art As per government order for a nation-wide preservation of the
artist's paintings and works, the museum was established in 1975. The site
selected was at the north end of Mymensingh, the hometown of Shilpacharya
Zainul Abedin, by the nature surrounded shadowy banks of the old Brahmaputra.
The concept of an archive was first conceptualized by the Shilpacharya who, in
mid nineteen fifties, spearheaded the movement of collecting neglected pieces
of invaluable works of art scattered all over rural Bangladesh.
3.Anandamohan College:
Anandamohan College one of the largest
colleges in Bangladesh, was established at Mymensingh in 1901. Ananda Mohan
bose established the Mymensingh Institution in 1883 in his own family residence
at Rambabu Road of Mymensingh town. The institution was later renamed City
Collegiate School. On 18 July 1901, it introduced a college branch as an
affiliate of the Calcutta City College established by the Brahmo Samaj.
4.Boro Kali Bari oldest temples:
Boro Kali Bari is one of the oldest temples
in the city of Mymensingh, Bangladesh. The temple is dedicated to the goddess
Kali. The main festival is Kali Puja which is celebrated every year. The temple
is located 10 minute rickshaw pull from the center of the city. A temple dedicated
to the Hindu God Shiva in Mymensingh district of Bangladesh. The temple is
noteworthy for its pagoda like architecture.
5.Ethnic Hajong
Village:
Hajong,
the ethnic group living in the hilly parts of Mymensingh district some of them
live in the sherpur, sylhet and netrokona regions. Their main settlements are
in sreebardi, haluaghat, nalitabari, Susong
durgapur, kalmakanda and Birishiri areas. In terms of ethnicity, they are
descendents of the Kachhari people of the Mongoloid race.
6.Jatiya Kabi Kazi Nazrul Islam University:
Jatiya
Kabi Kazi Nazrul Islam University is a government financed
public university of Bangladesh. It is also known as JKKNIU. It is located at Nama
para Battala, 1.5 kilometers from Trishal Upazila, some 22 kilometers from Mymensingh district and 100 kilometers
from Dhaka
7.Muktagachha
Zamindars:
The
Muktagachha zamindars of Mymensingh were well known in this sub-continent for
the various work they did and luxurious lives. People of the district remember
them with respect for their contributions, especially to the education sector.
Muktagachha is now a merely an upazila sadar, though at one stage 16 of the
zamindar inheritors controlled their administration from this place. History
says that Sree Krishna Acharya Chowdhury of Bogra was the first to establish Zamindari here.
8.Garo Pahar:
Valley of Garo pahar is
the area covered by Jamalpur and sherpur districts. Both of them are located at
the adjacent side of Mymensingh of india. Sherpur stands on the bank of the
Mirgi. Old Brahmaputra is the major river in this district. Madhutila Eco Park
is one of the wildlife sanctuaries of Bangladesh. This wildlife sanctuary has
some hills with some rare collections of wild birds and animals. Garo Pahar,
Bali jhuri, Sherpur was taken on 09 December
2008 and published over Panoramio. Garo Pahar, Bali jhuri, Sherpur is next to
Chakrapur and is located in Dhaka, Bangladesh.
9.Birishiri,
Netrokona district, Mymensingh:
Shusong Durgapur of Birishiri is
located at Netrokona district about 200 km north from Dhaka. It’s not only
blessed by charismatic natural beauty, is also reach in ethnic culture as there
are many ethnic groups like – Hajong, Garo, Achik and Mandi etc lives here.
Many people around the world come here to learn the ethnic culture and livings.
Birishiri is a remote place as it is
situated at the Bangladesh India border .The main attraction of Birishiri is
the ceramic hill of Durgapur and the picturesque landscape along the
Shomeshwari River. Except the rainy season it’s hard to find any water in the
river and that’s why the river changes its landscape color with the seasons.
There is also an ethnic museum at Birishiri. It’s a must place to visit while
you are in Birishiri.
10.Bokainagar
Fort:
Bokainagar
Fort situated 12 miles east of Mymensingh town on the eastern bank of the Balua
River (a branch of the Brahmaputra), is now in ruins. A connecting stream of
the Balua flowed east to west through the fort. No historical evidence regarding the
origin of Bokainagar fort has been found. The legend is that a Koch chief named
Bokai constructed the fort when the ancient kingdom of Kamarupa began to
disintegrate in the 15th century.
11.Tajpur Fort:
Tajpur Fort locally known as Killa Tajpur, is
situated some six miles northeast of bokainagar fort. According to local
traditions, the fort was built by Majlish Khan Humayun, a general of Sultan
Saifuddin Firuz Shah II (1488-1490), during
his campaign against kamarupa. During the heydays of the bara-bhuiyans towards
the end of the 16th century, the fort
was under the command of Nasir Khan and Daria Khan, allies of Osman Khan. In
1611, Nasir Khan and Daria Khan surrendered to the Mughals
12.Brahmaputra
River, Mymensingh:
Brahmaputra
River one of the largest rivers in the world, with its basin covering areas in
Tibet China, India and Bangladesh It originates in the Chemayung-Dung glacier,
approximately at some 145 km from Parkha, an important trade centre between
lake Manassarowar and Mount Kailas. It has a long course through the dry and
flat region of southern Tibet before it breaks through the himalayas near the
Namcha Barwa peak at about 7,755m. Its chief tributaries in India are the
Amochu, Raidak, Sankosh, Mans, Bhareli, Dibang and Luhit.
13.Bangshi River:
Bangshi River familiar as Banshi or Bangshi,
an important tributary of the dhaleshwari River. It originates from the foot of the madhupur tract. The river flows through
the eastern part of mymensingh district and travels southwards to fall into the Dhaleshwari after entering
Dhaka district near the junction of savar and kaliakair upazilas. In its
northern reaches the river joins with the old brahmaputra and ultimately turns
into an offshoot of the Old Brahmaputra.
